Experienced & Qualified Vehicle Ferry Skippers

SeaLink Travel Group is dedicated to the operation of a top-quality service through our fleet of vessels on the Hauraki Gulf, transporting passengers, cars and freight to Waiheke and Great Barrier Islands, as well as a commuter service from Pine Harbour.

We are seeking qualified Vehicle Ferry Skippers to join our ferry crews at Half Moon Bay in East Auckland or Wynyard Wharf in the CBD.

These are permanent, full time positions on a 3 days on 3 days off roster including public holidays. Shifts can vary between 10.5 - 12.5 hours in duration depending on the day of the week and peak holiday times.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Conducting pre and post-sailing safety checks.
  • Ensuring vessel compliance as per internal operational requirements, MR Part 19 (MOSS) and HSAW 2015.
  • Operating vessels with a focus on passenger, crew and vessel safety.
  • Providing crew supervision and training as required.
  • Completion of administrative tasks including timely and accurate reporting.
  • Maintaining schedules as per the timetable.
  • Proactively ensuring the vessel achieves full operational capability every day.

To be successful in the role you will need to have the following qualifications, experience and abilities:

  • Current Master ticket 500GT or SRL with > 24 meters endorsement or equivalent commercial ticket
  • Passenger Endorsement
  • MEC 6
  • Auckland Harbour P.E.C. an advantage
  • Current First Aid
  • 5 years’ skipper experience on large vessels
  • Strong involvement and understanding with MOSS/ H&S compliance
  • Able to demonstrate a positive, solutions focused and customer centric approach
  • A proactive and supportive trainer and leader

Experienced High-Speed Ferry Skippers (Based at Pine Harbour)

Our fleet of commuter high speed catamarans cover the route between Pine Harbour and Auckland CBD in a little over 30 minutes, 20 times a day, as well as private charters around the Hauraki Gulf. We are seeking motivated and highly skilled skippers to join our close-knit team based at Pine Harbour Marina in Beachlands.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Conducting pre and post-sailing safety checks.
  • Ensuring ferry compliance as per internal operational requirements, MR Part 19 (MOSS) and HSAW 2015.
  • Operating vessels with a focus on passenger, crew and vessel safety
  • Providing crew supervision and training as required
  • Timely completion of administrative tasks including timely and accurate reporting
  • Maintaining schedules as per the timetable
  • Proactively ensuring the vessel achieves full operational capability every day

To be successful in the role you will need to have the following qualifications, experience and experience:

  • Minimum qualification of a CLM, ILM (Ringfenced) or SRL (Passenger endorsed) certificate - a high-speed endorsement is preferred
  • A proven record of marine experience – Hamilton Jet Unit experience is desirable
  • Be able to work under pressure, autonomously and as part of a team
  • Effective and professional interpersonal skills
  • Able to demonstrate a positive, solutions focused and customer centric approach

Hours of work cover the Monday to Friday Pine Harbour service with shifts starting between 5.30am and 7am and finishing between 7pm and 8.30pm.  Rosters can be 12 hour days or split shifts.  Weekend charter work will be required from time to time.

Vehicle Ferry Engineers (on-board)

SeaLink Travel Group is dedicated to the operation of a top-quality service through our fleet of vessels on the Hauraki Gulf, transporting passengers, cars and freight to Waiheke and Great Barrier Islands, as well as a commuter service from Pine Harbour.

We are seeking qualified maritime Engineers on board our vehicle ferries to join our crews at Half Moon Bay in East Auckland or Wynyard Wharf in the CBD.

These are permanent, full time positions on a 3 days on 3 days off roster including public holidays. Shifts can vary between 10.5 - 12.5 hours in duration depending on the day of the week and peak holiday times.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Management of large vessel mechanical operating systems
  • Monitor generator, engines, equipment and gear hourly
  • Maintain complete and current log entries
  • Conduct deck rounds
  • Conduct safety ship management duties
  • Repairs and maintenance
  • Painting and cleaning
  • Relieve Master on watch
  • Provide general information / interest announcements to passengers
  • Conduct visual, radar and radio watch
  • Raise and lower ramp
  • Ensure safe loading, unloading and stowing of passengers, vehicles and freight
  • Release and recover mooring lines
  • Proactive communication and assistance with the onshore Engineering team

To be successful in the role you will need to have the following skills, knowledge and qualities:

  • Engineering qualification (MEC6) or higher (essential)
  • Minimum of 2 years maritime experience and sea service
  • Approved competency level (approved by Fleet Engineer or higher)
  • Vessel repairs and maintenance
  • Sound engineering skills, both sea and in port
  • Ability to pilot the vessel in an emergency
  • Effective technical skills
  • Ability to work under pressure
  • Problem solving skills

Qualified Vehicle Ferry Deckhands

We are seeking qualified Deckhands to join our crews at Half Moon Bay in East Auckland or Wynyard Wharf in the CBD.

These are permanent, full time positions on a 3 days on 3 days off roster including public holidays. Shifts can vary between 10.5 - 12.5 hours in duration depending on the day of the week and peak holiday times.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Ensuring the safety of all passengers and vehicles on and off the vessels
  • Providing a welcoming, safe and efficient service to all customers
  • Assisting the Vessel Master and/or senior crew where required
  • Make safety announcements including points of interest and voyage details
  • Conducting vessel rounds and reporting back to Vessel Master and/or Senior Crew
  • Conducting visual and radio watch as instructed
  • Assisting with securing the vessel
  • Participating in drills on donning life jackets
  • Cleaning and tidying the deck, cabin and facilities as required

To be successful in the role you will need to have the following skills, knowledge and qualities:

  • Essential qualifications - QDC (or equivalent) or STCW
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • A quick learner
  • A demonstrated ability to work under pressure
  • Work well in a team
  • Full drivers’ licence (due to shift work public transport cannot be relied upon)

High Speed Ferry Deckhands (based at Pine Harbour)

Our fleet of commuter high speed catamarans cover the route between Pine Harbour and Auckland CBD in a little over 30 minutes, 20 times a day, as well as private charters around the Hauraki Gulf.

Due to internal movements, full-time permanent Deckhand opportunities have become available in our close-knit team based at Pine Harbour Marina in Beachlands.

These roles are responsible for ensuring all passengers are ticketed and boarded safely and for achieving a high level of customer care and safety.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Conducting pre and post-sailing safety checks
  • Safety announcements
  • Watch keeping and trip reports
  • Ropework and cleaning duties
  • Ticket purchasing and cash handling

To be successful in the role you will need to have the following experience and abilities:

  • Sea time experience (preferred)
  • Customer service experience
  • Professional, positive ‘can do’ attitude and highly self-motivated
  • Flexibility with work hours and role requirements
  • Drivers’ license (Restricted or Full)

We currently provide a Monday to Friday service with shifts starting between 5.30am and 7.00am and finishing between 7.00pm and midnight (Fridays only).  Rosters can be 12 hour days or split shifts, so this position would ideally be suited to those living in Beachlands, Mararetai or Whitford.  Weekend charter work will also be required from time to time.
